Roads To Travel Before You Die

Why Do We Tend To Whisper In The Dark? Earth Hour 2010

Earth Hour 2010 has come and gone in Calgary. This was the first time I participated in Earth Hour. I was saddened by the sight of lights on in my complex. The majority of the units had all their lights.

Although the lights were still on in my complex, the rest of Calgary got on board. Some of the buildings downtown that participated in Earth Hour; Telus Tower, Old PetroCan Tower, Calgary Tower, Hyatt, Bow Tower, Municipal Building(Oz), Public Library, and the Epcor Centre.

The results for Calgary were a little disappointing compared to last year. Calgary saw a reduction of 5 megawatts, 2009 was a better result, as we saved 10 megawatts. Regardless, reduction is reduction is reduction. The 5 megawatt reduction in Calgary during Earth Hour equates to 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions that were not emitted into the air.

The only question I have that came out of Earth Hour 2010; Why do we tend to whisper when we are in the dark?

What Has The World Come To?

As I sit here watching the #yyc feed on Twitter about the hostage taking in a SW Calgary Junior High it makes me wonder "What is the world coming to?". I know the world isn't a perfect place but it is becoming a more violent and dangerous place everyday.

Times like this make me look back at how things were back in the day, when I was in Junior High. We didn't have knives, guns, or weapons of any kind. We weren't perfect either, I can remember the buzz around school when there was going to be a fight. Half the school would show up in the field behind the school. Most fights were between boys, but there were the odd girl fights too.

I have never been a fan of violence, but I never saw anyone get severely hurt in any of these fights, nor did I ever see someone get killed. I never saw anyone ganging up on anyone, people just stood by and let the 2 fighters sort out their differences. Most fights never lasted more than 5 minutes. A few punches thrown and connected and it was over.

Now a days, kids are carrying knives, rifles, hand guns and even automatic machine guns. I feared for my daughter growing up, I always warned her to not look certain types in the eyes, fearing that they may kill her for just looking at them the wrong way. And even now I tell her to keep her keys between her fingers and be prepared to stab someone in the eyes if they jump her. She has never been jumped but her boyfriend has, so I always knew it was possible, but for her it hit home when he was jumped.

I live in a fairly safe neighbourhood in Calgary but have had two incidents where police have been at my door asking if we had seen any activity due to severe attacks. Once was for a carjacking and the person was beaten nearly to death. The other time was someone had been jumped and severely beaten. This is happening in my back yard.

What happened to the days where you let your kids play outside until the street lights came on? Playing hide and seek or knock on ginger were the time killers we used. The days when you could walk to the 24 hour convenience store at any time of night? Honestly, I blame it on TV, video games and absentee parents.

Growing up I remember spending most of my time outside, not in front of a TV. Saturday morning was TV time. Video games were the likes of pong. Although, latch key kids became well known in my generation, my parents were still very involved in what I was doing with my time.

Kids today are watching movies that depict horrible violence. Rating these movies doesn't stop these kids from watching them. With the invention of the internet, kids are viewing things that would probably shock the most violent person and they never have to step into a movie theatre. TV isn't any better. But video games are the worse to blame...games like GTA where you are completing levels by killing people on the streets. These games are for adults...but kids are playing them too..where are the parents, is my question.

So as I sit here questioning what is happening with world I slowly realize that it is the core family values that is missing from the lives of people/children today. Children need constant guidance and the only one to blame for lack of guidance is the parent. As soon as we return to our core family values we may be lucky enough to see a swift change in how we are treating each other in the world today.

A Moment of Sadness is Upon ME

I had a really rough night last night, both emotionally and physically. I was up until 6:00 AM. My mind would not rest. I have been feeling excited, anxious, nervous, relieved and sad, at all once.

If you do not know, I will be having a hysterectomy on Wednesday, February 10, 2010. I was originally having the surgery on March 3, so when I received the phone call from my doctor saying my surgery has been pushed up, I was totally caught off guard, and overwhelmed with confusing feelings, as this meant finality was nearer than I was prepared for.

At first they were going to be doing a Endometrial Ablation (see video in previous blog to learn more about this procedure)which would allow me to keep my uterus, ovaries, cervix and fallopian tubes. As time went by and another review of my symptoms, my doctor thought that the Ablation would only be a band-aid for my symptoms and that their was a huge risk that the procedure would not be successful. She stated that a hysterectomy would be the best option to guarantee a successful outcome. This too was a shock to my system, one day I was having one procedure that was only day surgery, and the next I was having a surgery that would require a stay in the hospital. THIS MADE ME VERY NERVOUS.

So as you see I have had a lot of different things thrown at me a little unexpectedly. Such is life, but it has still been hard to handle. Yes, I am very happy that very shortly I will not be suffering anymore. No more pain. No more spending day after day after day in my bed. No more pills of all kind to help me cope. I will have my life back, which I have been missing for almost 2 years now. Im tired of being bed ridden, going on 4 months now. I miss my work. I miss my day to day activities. The only thing that has me sad, is that the opportunity of feeling a baby move, kick and grow inside of me will be gone, FOREVER! Yes, I can adopt, use surrogacy, etc..but feeling a baby grow inside of you is an experience in itself, that I am very saddened by the fact this opportunity isn't possible anymore for me.

I am a single mother and am very grateful for the beautiful daughter I have, but this is where some of this sadness comes from. I was a teenage pregnant girl at 17 years old. I had, somewhat, of a strict mother, who wasn't very proud to find out her baby girl was pregnant at such a young age. It was "decided" that I would give up this baby for adoption. I attend a high school for pregnant teenagers to keep up on my high school credits. But that was about all that I did that seemed in the norm of a pregnancy. There were no pictures of me pregnant, no one fawning over me wanting to touch my belly, no baby shower (came after the fact). I honestly felt like a dirty little secret in my family. I gave birth to my daughter on July 5. Since I was giving her up for adoption they did not allow me to see her at all once she came out of me. I did get a chance to see her a couple of times once I was comfortable in my bed. On the last day of my stay in the hospital, I called my mother to let her know I was being discharged. I had this huge lump in my throat and emptiness in my heart. At that very moment, my life changed forever! My mother said she couldn't let her be given up for adoption, and the rest is history. But as you can see it wasn't a memorable pregnancy at all. I was looking forward to getting married and sharing in the joyous experience of pregnancy with whom ever I married. Not going to happen now. So I hope this gives you a little more insight into what I have been going through emotionally. Yes, physically I cannot wait to feel "normal" again, but it is at a great price in my heart and soul that I am paying for this normalcy.

Do not get me wrong, I am grateful for the beautiful daughter I have, the wonderful family supporting me, and great friends that are always there for me. I am also grateful for a half decent health care system in place that is allowing me to have this surgery at no cost to me, some people in other parts of the world aren't so lucky.

On a closing note; I will no longer have to be a walking crime scene..a bloody mess. Time heals all wounds. This too will pass. Stay strong, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, even if that statement seems a little understated to me right now. Im hanging in there.

My 2010 Oscar Predications

I love the movies. I watch all movies, even the bad ones. Im the type who likes to base my own opinion on movies than trusting the critics. Alot of the time I agree with the critics, but there are times when we are on the opposite page.

Things To Do Before I Die (The Buried Life)

There is this new show on MTV called The Buried Life that I absolutely love, it makes me cry and laugh. On this show 4 guys (Dave Lingwood, Jonnie Penn, Duncan Penn, Ben Nemtin) are going across America fulfilling 100 items on their list of things to do before they die. Also, they find individuals along the way and ask them what one thing they would like to do before they die,and they help this individual fulfill that dream.

So far they have complete two items on their list: Attend Playboy Party at the Mansion and Make A Toast At A Strangers Wedding. The Playboy Party episode was hilarious, as they decided to dress up as Oompa Loompa and hide in a cake to sneak in, they were successful. The individual they helped was a teacher who wished he could provide working computers for his students at his private school. The boys heading out on to the street and started to perform for change, all and all they were successful and presented the teacher with a brand new Mac computer for his students. The individual they helped on the episode where the toasted a stranger at a wedding, was a man who had not spoken or seen his son in 17 years. The boys put their thinking caps on and tracked down the man's son. At the end of the episode you see the man on the phone speaking with his son. I CRIED SO HARD!

The man reason I am writing this post is to share with you my list of things to do before I die. I started creating this list last year in preparation for my 40th Birthday coming up in 2010. My plan was to complete most, if not all, of these things in 2010 leading up to my birthday in August. I will post this list here and cross of the items has I complete them. Here you go:

1. Bungee Jump
2. Attend the Warped Tour and body surf
3. Sing Karaoke in Public
4. Get Tattoo to Celebrate 40 Years
5. Sky Dive
6. Attend a Taping of Oprah
7. Attend a Taping of Ellen
8. Get Complete Make Over (trust me I need it)
9. Attend a Stripper Class
10. Learn to Ski/Snowboard
11. Learn to Surf
12. Go Whitewater Rafting
13. Go on a Pub Crawl (never attended one of these)
14. Stay up for 24hrs in Las Vegas
15. Be a team member of a roller derby team for 1 night

I continuously add to this list, but this is where I am at so far. I have not completed any of these yet, as you know, I have been bed ridden for the last 3 months and 1 more month to go. Then look out world, here I come.

Fly On The Wall @ #YYC4Haiti

I spent my Thursday night feeling like Big Brother watching the live stream of the biggest and best "tweetup" event Calgary has ever seen, #YYC3Haiti.

This was my first "tweetup" event, and unfortunately I was unable to attend due to my own health issues. Thank goodness for the event organizers who decided to stream the event live on Ustream. I was able to feel involved in the event from the comfort of my bed.

I was so excited about this event, as I had watched how this event transpired from the very first tweet from @C_DIG (Camilla Di Giuseppe)"#YYCTWEETUP - All 4 a tweetup where we can raise funds 4 #Haiti Relief. I believe #YYC can pull off something very special. Who's in? RT pls 6:00 PM Jan 14th". This one tweet got the ball rolling, and rolling fast. It was amazing to watch all of #YYC come together and jump on board for this event. I spent my time leading up to the event sending out emails, tweets and wall posts on Facebook to bring as much attention as possible to this event and do my part in raising awareness about the relief efforts for Haiti.

The event was going to start at 5:30, the geek that I am was already to go and viewing the live stream a 1/2 hour before the event even started. I wasn't excited at all..lol. I watched as our host for the evening, @ispeakcanadian, aka Sarah, prepared herself for the live feed. I was not envying Sarah, as we all know how live interviews can be nerve racking, as you never know what people may say, and you have to be on your toes for the possibility of anything. And trust me, everything and anything did happen during the live feed and Sarah handled herself famously.

What I enjoyed the most about watching the live feed was putting faces to many of the tweeters I have had the pleasure of following on Twitter. It also gave me the opportunity to be introduced to other, like minded, Calgary tweeters that I may never have came across if it wasn't for #YYC4Haiti.

I was really impressed with how @ispeakcanadian incorporated some, if not all, of the questions that were being thrown at her by people tweeting, I was one of them. I had made a comment about how there were a lot of female eye candy in attendance at the event (Stampede Queen/Princess, Cheerleaders, etc) and I was wondering where the male eye candy was for us females. Sarah did not disappoint...she found some of the best eye candy in attendance and interviewed them, and I totally agreed with her choices (@roger was one of them...yummy)

One of the funniest moments of the evening for me was the smell of bacon. Yes, you heard me right, the smell of bacon was so overwhelming I could smell it in my bedroom. I was wondering where the smell was coming from, when, lo and behold, the biggest piece of bacon I had ever seen appeared on camera.

As soon as I saw this, I tweeted the following: "OMG the guy dressed up as a piece of bacon at #yyc4haiti too funny. Did he lose a bet?" I received a bunch of responses introducing me to Jerry Aulenbach (@ZoomJer) and was told that this is what he does. Thank you @ZoomJer for the best laugh I had in a long time. Keep up the good work.

My priceless moment of the evening would have to be the interview with the magician. The magician himself was forgettable, but the expression on @ispeakcanadians face during his magic trick was priceless.

All in all I had an awesome time participating in #YYC4Haiti. A moment, that hit home for me, was when the emcee at the event, sorry cannot recall his name right now, quoted the lords prayer "Give us our daily bread" and requested that everyone in attendance give their daily salary. This moved me enough that I instantly went to the Red Cross site and donated my daily wage of $225. This wasn't the first time I donated, as I have been busy donating via text since the earthquake happened, but his request hit home and I had to act.

The success of this event is in the amount raised for Haiti relief, well over $25,000. I am proud to live in a city where so many citizens have such great civic pride to come together like this as a whole and help those less fortunate than us. This event would not have been a success with out the outstanding work done by the following ladies: @C_DIG, @alex_ruiz, @that_angela and @ispeakcanadian. Ladies without your tireless effort this event would not have been as successful as it was. You inspired Calgary to come together for a great cause and I am truly happy to have been apart of it.

Am I Still A Woman?

That is the question that I have allowed to enter my mind lately, since I found out I will be having a hysterectomy instead of an ablation, as my doctor felt that the endometrial ablation would be only a band aid for my problem and may not even resolve my issue. So instead of risking me having to suffering any longer, my doctor feels a hysterectomy is the best avenue to take.

I am an intelligent woman. I know I am still a woman and will be until the day I die. I know it is just my mind trying to play tricks on me and confuse me into thinking I am going to be less woman without my womb. 99.9% of the time I do not let my mind trick me, Im too smart for that. That .1% of the time, has me writing this post.

The most sadness that is upon me is from the fact I will no longer be able to have babies. I had my daughter very young and was dreaming of one day having another child, that dream is no more. Yes, I can adopt, yes there are many different options for having another child. That is not the point. The opportunity to feel something growing in me, kicking and moving will never happen again. I was so young with my first child I did not take the time to cherish those moments when I was pregnant. This is what saddens me the most about all of this.

On a positive note, I am grateful that I will no longer be suffering and will be able to get my life back on track and some resemblance of normalcy. Im very excited that I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am grateful that I was lucky enough to experience the joy of pregnancy with my daughter, as I know there are many woman who never get that opportunity. I count my blessings.

Now if I could only get my long term disability claim approved.

Haiti Earthquake Caught on Tape

100,000 DEAD in Earthquake in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti 12 Jan 2010 Aftermath

Reason, Season, Lifetime

This is an oldie but goodie that I have recieved numerous times via email, but it is one of my favorite, so I thought I would share it with you:

People come into your life or a reason, a season or a lifetime.
When you figure out which it is, you know exactly what to do.

When someone is in your life for a reason, it is usually to meet need you
have expressed outwardly or inwardly.
They have come to assist you through
a difficulty, to provide you with
guidance and support, to aid you
physically, emotionally or
spiritually.
They may seem like a godsend, and they
are.
They are there for the reason you need
them to be.
Then, without any wrong doing on your
part or at an inconvenient time,
this person will say or do something
to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die.
Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up or out and force
you to take a stand.

What we must realize is that our need
has been met, our desire fulfilled;
their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered
and it is now time to move on.
When people come into your life for a
season, it is because your turn has
come to share, grow or learn. They may
bring you an experience of peace or
make you laugh. They may teach you
something you have never done. They
usually give you an unbelievable amount
of joy.
Believe it! It is real!
But, only for a season.

Lifetime relationships teach you
lifetime lessons; those things you must
build upon in order to have a solid
emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson,
love the person/people (anyway); and
put what you have
learned to use in all other
relationships and areas of your life.
It is said that love is blind but
friendship is clairvoyant.
I know why you are in my life and I
love you for that reason.

AVATAR: Will History Repeat it's Self?

I just finished watching AVATAR. Amazing movie kept my interest for the entire 2.5 hours. Highly recommend this movie.

This movie definitely got me thinking. When humans find another livable planet with a living race on it, are we going to destroy the planet's natural resources for the mighty dollar, the same way we have destroyed earth's? I hope not. I hope that we learn from our mistakes and cherish and honour natural resources they way they should be and not take them for granted the way we have.

And if there are other living beings on the planet I hope they will fight hard the way the AVATARS did to not allow any foreign visitors, like ourselves, to come in and destroy what it so beautiful. NATURE. Shame on the human race if history repeats itself.

Addiction to Facebook Games

The first step to recovering from an addiction is stop the denial. I am in dire need of a 12 step program for the games on Facebook. I am sure I am not the only one, as most of the games I play require your friends to play along and I would say 50% of my friends list plays, at the very least, one game on Facebook.

What is it about these games that has me setting alarms to check my crops in Farmville? Or to feed or sell my fish in Fishville to reach the next level before they die. I have built a huge amusement park trying to gain as many visitors as possible and I am only 1 level away from being in the first spot. And I will set as many alarms as possible to ensure I get to that level. Now if that isn't an addiction, I do not know what is.

Im not even sure if I would be addicted to these games if I had not been off work for the last 3 months. I am grateful for these games, as they have helped me pass the time while I have been bed ridden. Will I continue to play these games when I am well again and return to work? I do not know, maybe, I cannot say for sure.

All I know is that my crops, fish, animals, amusement park, cities, pets have become a fixture in my day to day life and it doesn't seem like they have any plans of every leaving. I may have to hire a help to get rid of them...lol...as I am sure I will have great difficulty walking away from them. This is how bad the addiction is. LOL.

I have even gone as far as adding my name to special lists to get more friends on my list so I can further my progress in certain games. Which is comforting to some extent, as it makes me feel less alone in this crazy addiction. It is like hanging out in a crack house with fellow crack users...lol.

Well before I get too carried away with this blog entry I need to return to the crack house I call Facebook and check on my crops, food, fish, etc before I start experiencing the horrible pains of withdrawl...lol

"Friends" Episode - Ross Laminates Top 5 List

One of my favorite episodes from Friends was the one where they all create their list of 5 famous people they could get a free pass from their partner to sleep with. Poor Ross had his list laminated and prior to laminating it he removed Isabella Rosellini from his list and replaced her with someone else. Lo and behold Ross runs into Isabella Rosellini in the coffee house and no longer has her on his list. Lucky for him Rachel allows him to have the free pass with Isabella anyways, which he had no luck with...poor Ross...lol.

When this episode aired all my friends, family and I created our list of 5 famous people we would want a free pass to sleep with. My list has changed numerous times over the years, but I haven't laminated my list yet, for that very reason.

I'm a currently single and can sleep with whomever I want, but here is my list of 5 famous men I would sleep with if I had the chance, in no specific order:

1. Jason Statham
2. David Beckham
3. Eddie Ciberian
4. Lenny Kravitz
5. Matthew McConaghey

My #5 changes often. At one point it was Paul Walker, then he didn't age well, so i removed him. Then it was Ben Affleck, but he lost his appeal when he stayed married for more than 2 years.

We all know the chances of me every getting to sleep with any of these men is 1 in a trillion. Although, I did run into Eddie Ciberian during his scandalous affair with that country singer, Leanne Rhimes. I was on my lunch break, sitting at McDonalds, with a good view of Flames Central across from me. As I bite into my burger this man starts walking towards me, I was like "He looks familiar, where do I know him from" as he got closer it struck me who it was, it was my hottie from Third Watch, Eddie Ciberian. I stopped myself from jumping up and banging on the window and chasing after him, I was all a fluster after he passed. That is the closest I have gotten to any of these men on my list.

If you had a free pass list, who would you have as your top 5 famous people?
